Spring is the perfect time to freshen up your home both inside and out; however, while dusting and hoovering is at the top of most people’s lists during a spring clean, the less obvious jobs such as blind cleaning are often forgotten about. On the surface, cleaning your blinds may seem like a bit of a daunting task, especially with styles like roller shades that can be made from a variety of different fabrics. But with a little know-how, this job is not as not as complicated as it seems… below, we’ve provided a step-by-step guide on how to clean your roller blinds to ensure you carry out a truly thorough spring clean:
-
Remove your Blinds
To make the cleaning process easier, remove your roller blinds from their windows and lay them on a flat surface where they are fully supported and there is no overhang. Large kitchen or dining room tables are great places for blind cleaning; however, before popping down your roller blind, it is also worth placing a waterproof tablecloth over your table to ensure no water or cleaning fluids seep through and ruin the surface underneath.
-
Give them a Hoover
Once your roller blinds are laid on a flat surface, grab your vacuum cleaner and give them a gentle hoover to remove any excess dust or dirt that may have built up over time. If you have a hoover with a removable nozzle, it is best to use the nozzle for blind cleaning as not only will this make the job easier for you but it will also provide a more thorough clean by targeting specifics areas of the blind.
-
Wipe them Down
After removing any surface debris, the most simple and effective way to clean your roller blinds is to wipe them down. To do this, take a cloth or sponge and dip it in a warm water and detergent solution. Once it has absorbed enough liquid, wring out your chosen cleaning item and start wiping down the base of the blind gently in small sections to ensure the detergent soaks through. Then, using a separate damp cloth or sponge, wipe over the same area to rinse out the detergent solution. Repeat this process until you have covered the entire blind, which at this point, will be a little damp all over. If you are happy with its level of cleanliness, hang your blind up to dry either on a washing rack or outside if the weather permits it. However, if your blinds are still stained with dirt or marks, you’ll need to carry out a deeper clean…
-
Soak your Blinds
Giving your blinds a lengthy soak is always the best way to tackle tough stains but shouldn’t be used as a day-to-day cleaning method. Before starting, it’s always best to check with the supplier of your blinds whether you can submerge them fully underwater; if not, just giving them a very thorough scrub with warm water should also help remove stains. If you can soak your blinds, fill your bathtub half full of warm water and mix in some fabric detergent. Then, take a small soft brush and gently scrub any badly stained or dirty areas on the blinds, leaving them to soak for an hour or two. Once they have had a few hours soaking in the tub, rinse your blinds off with warm water and hang them up to dry, removing as much water as you possibly can beforehand.
